Support for Your Recovery: Braces, Boots, Casts, and Splints

When recovering from a foot or ankle injury, stabilization is key. Orthopedic supports are designed to protect injured tissues, offload weight, and allow you to remain mobile during the healing process.

Standard Stabilization Methods

1. Splints (The "Half-Cast")

Splints are often used immediately after an injury or surgery when swelling is at its peak.

  • Purpose: Provides rigid support on one or two sides of the limb while allowing room for inflammation.
  • Patient Tip: Do not remove a splint unless explicitly told to do so by your doctor, as it is custom-molded to your specific injury.

2. Casts

Casts provide circumferential (360-degree) immobilization for fractures or severe ligament repairs.

  • Fiberglass vs. Plaster: Most modern casts use fiberglass because it is lighter, more durable, and "breathes" better than traditional plaster.

3. Walking Boots (CAM Boots)

Controlled Ankle Motion (CAM) boots are a modern alternative to casts for many injuries.

  • Adjustability: They can be removed for bathing, sleeping, driving and or physical therapy (if permitted).
  • Rocker-Bottom Sole: The curved sole helps you maintain a natural walking pattern while keeping the ankle joint still.

Advanced and Custom Bracing Technology

In cases of chronic instability

or long-term recovery, standard "off-the-shelf" options may not be enough. Our practice utilizes advanced technology to provide better comfort and mobility.

Tayco External Ankle Brace

Traditional braces go inside the shoe, which can be bulky and uncomfortable. The Tayco Brace is unique because it fits over the outside of your existing shoe.

  • Benefits: Provides the stability of a walking boot but allows you to wear your own footwear. It is often used for severe sprains or as a transition out of a walking boot.

FlexiOH Immobilization

The FlexiOH is a breathable, washable alternative to a traditional cast.

  • Benefits: It features a lattice-like design that allows for airflow and can get wet. This eliminates the itchiness and odor often associated with standard casts and is ideal for active patients.

Xtern AFO (Foot Drop Brace)

For patients dealing with "Foot Drop" (inability to lift the front of the foot), the Xtern AFO by TurboMed is a game-changer.

  • How it Works: Like the Tayco, it attaches to the outside of the shoe. It acts like a spring, lifting the foot during each step.
  • Benefits: Because it doesn't touch the skin of the foot or ankle, there is no risk of rubbing or skin breakdown, making it much more comfortable for all-day wear.

Care and Safety Tips

  • The "Two-Finger" Rule: You should be able to fit two fingers under the edge of your brace or cast. If it feels tighter, you may have excessive swelling.
  • Skin Integrity: Check the skin around the edges of the device daily for redness, blisters, or sores.
