Ankle Sprain
Understanding Ankle Sprains and Ligament Damage
An ankle sprain occurs when the strong bands of tissue (ligaments) that connect the bones of the ankle joint are stretched or torn. Most sprains happen when the foot twists or rolls inward, damaging the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle. This common during sports and exercise.
Common Symptoms
The severity of symptoms usually depends on the degree of the tear:
- Pain: Often sudden and sharp at the time of injury, followed by a persistent ache.
- Swelling: Occurs shortly after the injury as the body sends fluid to the area to protect it.
- Bruising: Skin discoloration that may spread toward the toes or up the leg.
- Instability: A feeling that the ankle is "giving way" or is too weak to support weight.
- Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty moving the foot up, down, or side-to-side.
Ligament Repair Surgery
While many sprains heal with time, physical therapy and rest, surgery may be recommended for patients with chronic instability-where the ankle remains loose and "gives out" frequently.
The most common procedure involves tightening the damaged ligaments. Modern advancements now allow surgeons to use internal bracing or specialized anchors to reinforce the repair, providing long term stability and allowing earlier weight bearing.
Modern Techniques: Anchors & Internal Bracing
Traditional surgery often required long periods of non weightbearing (6+ weeks) to allow the tissue to heal. Today, we use suture anchors combined with high-strength surgical tape (an internal brace) to reinforce the ligament repair.
Why Anchors Matter:
- Quicker Recovery: The mechanical strength provided by the anchors and internal brace often allows for protected weight-bearing and early range of motion exercises much sooner than traditional methods.
- Long-Term Stability: The anchors act as a permanent reinforcement, providing a "seat belt" for the ligament as it heals. This is particularly beneficial for athletes or active individuals who put high stress on their joints.
- Low Profile: The anchors provide a stable foundation while maintaining a small footprint.
